Origin, classification and history

Origin: USA.
F.C.I classification: Group 6 - hounds.

The Redbone Coonhound breed has been selected since the 1700s. The presence of hounds with this typical pigmentation has been documented for over 200 years. This red pigmentation originally had very large white spots, which today have been greatly diminished and in some dogs completely eliminated. It owes its name to one of its first breeders "Peter Redbone", originally from Tennessee.

General aspect

Medium sized hound. It has a well proportioned body and fair relationships. Slim construction and dry but well developed muscles. The fundamental characteristic of this breed is the typical red coat. Redbone is the only one-color "coonhound".

Very lively and active dog; energetic breed mainly used for hunting raccoons, from which it takes the name of "coonhound"; but it is also used for fox and wild rabbit hunting. Determined and very affectionate towards the owner.
